The rose species collection at the Timaru Botanic Gardens was established in 1989 with further plantings in 1992. Plants and seeds were donated from New Zealand and overseas sources with 57 of the 100 - 150 known species roses represented in the plantings. Further beds have been developed to allow plants to grow without restricting their growth habit. 2015 National Spring Rose Show and Convention The 2015 National Spring Rose Show and Convention was hosted by the South Canterbury Rose Society at the Caroline Bay Hall in Timaru, November 21st and 22nd 2015. The theme of the show was ‘Lest We Forget – Roses of Remembrance’ and a number of the special classes reflected this theme. Opened in 2001, the garden is a collection of roses collected by world renown rosarian Trevor Griffiths. Designed by Sir Miles Warren, the garden contains over 1100 varieties of roses - mostly heritage, species and David Austin varieties.
