Roses without sprays

The latest issue of the Weekend Gardener magazine features Hawkes Bay gardener Georgina Campbell and her thoughts on growing roses organically without the use of sprays. Her garden features over 2000 varieties of all types interplanted with other flowering plants. In the last two years, Georgina has been establishing a collection of roses from the McGredy rose breeding dynasty, including Dr Sam McGredy who moved to New Zealand from Ireland in 1972 and who is widely regarded as one of the best rose breeders in the world.

This issue is onsale now from all leading supermarkets, bookshops, newsagents, garden centres or subscribe to the Weekend Gardener magazine by calling 0800 999 886 or online

I am a big fan of rugosa roses and I had two lovely Rugsin plants, my all time favourite. While I was overseas my tenant removed them both because they were hanging over the lawn!!!! None of the nz nurserys have any available. Does anyone have a sucker/cuttings? I am happy to pay for them and for postage. I live in Mosgiel.

I can’t find any reference to a rose by this name, but could it be Rugspin or Ruskin – both of these are rugosa roses.

Thanks Hayden – yes it is rugspin. Didn’t hit the p hard enough. It was breed in Denmark in the 1960’s. I got it from the trevor griffiths rose nursery in Timaru when it was still around over 20 years ago. Trinity Farm has one but they haven’t been able to propagate from it for 3 years. Anyone you know who has one?

    Hello Gail,

So have you found your Rugspin? I just saw it in the MistyDowns nursesry in Australia. Is there a problem getting one into NZ? I think also in the Honeysuckle Cottage Rose nursery here as well……

    Good luck,
    E L
