Every once in a while, a rose will ‘sport’ or mutate into a different colour from the parent. Some go onto become good roses in their own right such as this months rose.
‘Winchester Cathedral’ is a sport of the very popular ‘Mary Rose’, a pink David Austin variety that has been grown widely around the world and shares all of its attributes except flower colour. Rather than pink, it is white and still has the strong old rose fragrance which ‘Mary Rose’ is known for. The growth is bushy and the plant grows to 1m x 1m which makes it ideal for any garden. Plant it among other roses or flowering perennials for a great show.
Grows well in any garden, it is still one of the better white English roses around today. Introduced in 1988 by David Austin, it was named for the Winchester Cathedral Trust in the UK.
