Towards the end of the month, the roses start blooming again starting at the top half of New Zealand.
One of the earliest to bloom and a tried and true favourite for many years, Zephirine Drouhin is one rose worthy of a place in any garden.
An old fashioned variety, Zephirine Drouhin has flushes of double rosy pink blooms throughout the season. They are richly fragrant. The plant is care free and as an added bonus, is almost free of thorns adding to its great merit as a garden plant. It can be grown either as a large shrub or climber but will need some room. It is also tolerant of shade but for best results, like all roses, needs the sun.
Bred back in 1868 by the French breeder Bizot, it is a good performer in any garden and readily obtainable from garden centres and rose nurseries around New Zealand
