This month we feature My Girl, a great all round rose that deserves to be more widely grown in New Zealand.
While classified as a Hybrid Tea and has the large blooms typical of this type of rose, they are flat and come in clusters much like a floribunda. The blooms open rose pink and by the time they drop, they have a lavender tinge.
The plant is low growing and bushy making it ideal for even the smallest of gardens. Very healthy as well so a great all round rose – probably its best attribute is its consistency. There is even a hint of fragrance to please those lovers of fragrant roses .
Bred by Sam McGredy from Northland x Big Purple, My Girl is readily obtainable from garden centres and specialist rose nurseries around New Zealand. It was selected by a panel of school children as their favourite rose at the New Zealand Rose of the Year trials in 2009.
