Book Review – Palmers Rose Growing Handbook

Palmers Rose Growers Handbook by Janet Cheriton. RRP $24.99 incl GST.

This book is a welcome addition to those who are wanting to learn more about growing the queen of flowers in New Zealand after years of hardly nothing aimed at our unique growing conditions.

A wide range of topics are covered in detail that will guide anyone in their quest to grow great roses in their own garden. Even the most experienced rose grower is bound to learn something from this book with easy to understand information presented along with clear diagrams and fantastic colour photos

It is good to see an up to date list of recommended varieties to grow featuring many newer roses that are very easy to grow. One criticism is that since the book also covers Australia, there are a number of varieties listed that are simply not sold in New Zealand, or are known under different names here.

A worthwhile read for all lovers of the rose.

I just happen to be reading this book right now – it’s pretty good! It is not a book with a lot of colour pictures or an in-depth history of the rose, rather it focuses on the essentials required for growing roses in a simple “no nonsense” style. It’s always great to have another book with a New Zealand flavour – this book is very worthwhile for anyone new to growing roses.
