Some notes on the information in Rose Finder
Variety: This is the name used in marketing and is usually given by the breeder or their agent. It can change from country to country. We have listed the name used when the variety was first released in NZ and/or by which it is most commonly known as.
Synonym: These are name(s) used for the same variety in different markets or countries. The use of alternate names within the same market is discouraged worldwide. Changing a known rose’s name is reproachable and in many cases unlawful.
International Name: Most commonly referred to as the ‘Varietal Denomination’, this is the actual name that the rose is known by worldwide. It does not change from country to country. More often than not, the first few letters will signify the rose’s breeder. For example MACrexy = ‘Sexy Rexy’, bred by Sam McGredy.
Type Some roses may fit into more than one category so a general category has been listed. It may differ from the type used overseas as our growing conditions are different to other countries. This is particularly true with some shrubs of European origin that behave more like climbers in NZ. Abbreviations used are listed below;
HT = Hybrid Tea, Fl = Floribunda, Shr = Shrub, Clg = Climbing, Min = Miniature, Ram = Rambler, Pat = Patio, Poly = Polyantha, Gc = Groundcover, Rug = Rugosa, Gal = Gallica, Bour = Bourbon, Cent = Centifolia, Nois = Noisette, Dam = Damask, Port = Portland, Ayrs = Ayrshire, HMusk = Hybrid Musk, HPerp = Hybrid Perpetual, HSpn = Hybrid spin, HRug = Hybrid rugosa, HMult = Hybrid multiflora, HNit = Hybrid nitida, HMac = Hybrid macrantha, HSem = Hybrid sempervirens, Laev = laevigata
Breeder The person, head breeder or company who either originated the rose via breeding or discovery, or was the first known to introduce the rose.
NZ Rose Indicates if the rose was bred or first discovered in New Zealand.
Date The earliest known date referenced for the rose. It may be the year bred, budded, trialled or released.
Extra Additional note(s)
Nurseries These are the businesses in NZ that actually propagate your roses. Please note that while every endeavour is made to keep the database up to date, there will be times when varieties listed are no longer grown by a particular nursery.
Tip: Use the Search function below to help you look for a particular rose. Enter a name or part name and the table will update.
You can also search by any of the headings. For example, enter McGredy to list all the Sam McGredy-bred varieties or HT to enter all the Hybrid Teas.
