Upcoming Programme for 2024
On Saturday 16th of March Canterbury Rose Society members have the opportunity to visit one of the most stunning gardens in the Canterbury district. We have been invited to Lesley and Kelvin Finlay’s garden Wilson’s Mill which is included in New Zealand’s National Gardens of Significance.
Rose society members and friends are invited to meet at 12:00 for a walk about the garden, followed by a shared finger food lunch at 1:00. This should be a wonderful outdoor occasion for members. Access to Wilson’s Mill Garden is off Jeffs Drain Road in Ohoka. As a special treat for car enthusiasts, Kelvin will have his vintage car collection available for viewing. This is an outstanding collection of American classics, some of which are one offs, and is quite outstanding.
The monthly meeting for March is on Thursday the 21st at 7.30pm, and will feature everything about David Austin Roses. Claire Gilroy will present varieties which are growing well in NZ and she will cover their history, culture and the new varieties which will be available this season. Members interested in David Austin roses will find this presentation intensely interesting.
There will be a demonstration on how to take cuttings from your rose plants. This is the time of the year to increase your stocks and replace ones that aren’t doing so well.
Should be a good meeting so don’t miss out and all family, friends and new members are most welcome.
Membership is $30 annually (March-February or part thereof). Membership of the Canterbury Rose Society automatically gives you membership of the New Zealand Rose Society which is usually referred to as the “National Rose Society” Each year “National” produces two publications, the “Rose Annual” and the “Rose Review” which members of the Canterbury Rose Society receive.
As a member of Canterbury Rose Society all members have the benefit of local vendor discounts, a regular (monthly during the growing season) electronic newsletter, and free entry to our meetings and table shows as well as garden visits and pruning demonstrations.
